A road map to excellence

Thinking of a business plan as a route map to a journey is essential to finding your business success. As in a journey through the jungle you are starting somewhere and are aiming to get to a destination in or across the jungle.
On the way there are many difficulties. The terrain and weather represents the conditions of the markets you trade in. It may be mountainous or hilly, there might be swamps and rivers. The competition is represented by fierce monsters that will try to eat you, to complicate matters they may move around and change shape just Like real business competitors.
There might be a strong native jungle kingdom who are hostile to strangers, this might represent your government. Changing conditions are represented by storms, earthquakes and floods. On your journey there might be friends who might be your allies and help you deal with some of this problems(non-rival competitors who might provide support or referrals if giving the right tools). They may help you across high tides or provide boats across rivers.

Wouldn't you need a plan and preparation to embark on this journey?
Your skills and abilities are represented by where you started from, by them and by what you carry along on the journey you may be able to dodge some monsters, beat down some others with weapons you have brought or use the ropes you carry along with its hook to climb up or down a cliff face.
Using this metaphor will help you look objectively at planning. Some people without a well outlined and objective plan usually  state that they already well engaged and loaded with activities in their business and are already moving past the business jungle environment to the other side.

To illustrate their situation I'll describe them as carrying a huge weight on their back(their workload). Its so heavy that they are bent double and are inching along through the muddy swamp looking down at their feet. Of course, if they straighten up(i.e realize they need a business plan and that they will have to work more on their business rather than in it) they will have to stop for a moment even though it might be a strain to straighten up, they might then be able to spot the slow moving herd of buffalo coming their way, which is going to trample them into a pulp. Or they might see that they are actually moving with the tide and that the road is actually a few paces away to the side, making their journey so much easier.
Using planning in business is like using a route map on a journey it is essential to finding your way.
On my next post i will discuss why you need a financial development plan from the personal perspective, for your individual life's and family pathway to financial freedom.
